Rural Drainage Strategy in Victoria

October 6, 2018 0 Comments

With its aim to give clarity about the management of the rural drainage system, cutting red tape and help reduce financial loss resulting from water-logged paddocks and other drainage issues, the Victorian Government has presented the Rural Drainage Strategy to landholders. The strategy was released by Lisa Neville, Minister for Water.

The Rural Drainage Strategy is a product of extensive collaboration that aims to bring balance within agricultural productivity and protect the country’s environment and cultural assets.

The strategy aims to:

  • Guide landholders to make decisions on how they want to manage the rural drainage system
  • Outline the roles and responsibilities of landholders
  • Rebuild the local capability for agencies and landholders to address drainage issues
  • Provide additional benefits of protecting and improving environmental and cultural values
  • Promote opportunities for landholders and traditional owners to collaborate in managing the rural drainage system.

The Government of Victoria has agreed to provide a budget of $4.9 million to fund 11 pilot studies that may help the drainage issues. These pilot projects include $1 million for Woady Yaloak and Lough Calvert in the Corangamite region, $140,000 for the Moe River flats, $344,000 for the Budj Bim landscape, and $200,000 for south west, which will consider local concerns at Lake Gillear.

The Rural Drainage Strategy is a key initiative of Water for Victoria, with a $25 million investment in community resilience to floods and $222 million investment in waterway and catchment – opening up civil works in the state.

In a statement released by Lisa Neville, she said:

“Landholders told us that rural drainage was a problem – this strategy gives them certainty and sets out clear criteria to how to manage drainage at the local level.”

“Now governments – both state and local – can work together to cut red tape and help reduce financial stress associated with rural drainage problems across Victoria.” she added.
